SADD (Students
Against Destructive Decisions) is an organization that promotes teen
empowerment and uses peer influence to spread the message of positive
decision-making. The SADD organization is comprised of thousands of high
school and middle school chapters that embrace a “No Use” policy and
help educate their peers about potentially destructive decisions
regarding underage drinking, impaired driving, other drug use, violence,
and suicide.
Mission Statement
To
provide students with the best prevention and intervention tools
possible to deal with the issues of underage drinking, impaired driving,
drug abuse, smoking, relationships, civic duty and service volunteering,
safe driving, and other important decisions in their every day lives.
History
SADD began in
1986 as a local chapter of the National Students Against Drinking and
Driving with five students who showed concern over the issue. In the
80s, the SADD membership grew to as many as 600 members in one year,
and thousands more who signed the SADD contracts and pledges.
In
the 90s, SADD recognized the need to be able to address many more
important issues that teenagers, parents, and schools deal with daily.
We then decided it was time for a change. We kept the letters S-A-D-D,
but the words became Students Against Destructive Decisions.
Our
local chapter has won the Jefferson County Club of the Year numerous
times. Our yearly
scrapbook shows the many service activities in which we have
participated.
SADD
thanks all of our alumni members for getting us here and we challenge
our present and upcoming members to continue these high honors and fine
traditions in the next decade. Our thanks to parents, administration,
faculty, community, and media for helping to make our club one of the
best. Our thanks also to Ms. Martha Parker from the Jefferson County
Board of Education’s Safe and Drug Free Schools Program and to John
and Lowanda Perkins, the State Coordinator of SADD for Alabama.
