MU ALPHA THETA REQUIREMENTS

Mu Alpha Theta is the international high school and junior college mathematics honor society. The requirements are as follows:

bullet

All new members tapped will be required to have a 3.4 grade point average if tapped in their sophomore or junior year and a 3.2 grade point average if tapped in their senior year. This grade point average is from mathematics classes that are Algebra I or higher. All new members tapped must have completed three terms of college preparatory mathematics beginning with Algebra I as the lowest level course counted toward the three terms.

bullet

All new members tapped must have an overall 3.0 grade point average with no suspensions the year in which they are tapped. After that year, if a student commits a Class II offense, s/he will be placed on probation for a period of 18 weeks beginning immediately. If the student commits another Class II offense, s/he will be removed from Mu Alpha Theta. If a student commits a Class III offense, s/he will be removed immediately from Mu Alpha Theta.

bullet

All new members are required to maintain the required grade point average in mathematics classes or be placed on probation. The Mu Alpha Theta sponsor will check report cards at the end of each term. Any student failing to maintain the required mathematics' grade point average will be placed on probation for one term. If, at the end of that term, the student has attained the required mathematics' grade point aver-age, the student will be removed from probation. If not, the student will be re-moved from the club.

bullet

All members are required to pay their dues by the announced date or be placed on probation for one month. If, at the end of that month, the student has paid his dues, the student will be removed from probation. If not, the student will be removed from the club.

bullet

All members are required to participate in all activities of the club, which include service projects for school and community as well as support of the Math Team program. This may require time outside of class and/or donations from the membership. If a member fails to support the club and its activities, the student will be removed from the club.

bullet

Attendance at all club meetings is required. After one absence, members will be placed on probation. If another absence occurs consecutively, the student will be removed from the club.

bullet

All officers are required to be enrolled in a college preparatory mathematics class the school year they serve as officers.

bullet

No one may serve as Mu Alpha Theta president and National Honor Society president during the same school year.

bullet

No junior or senior student will be tapped into Mu Alpha Theta who has not passed all sections of the Graduation Exam. Any sophomore who is tapped and fails to pass the Alabama High School Graduation Exam the next school year will be placed on probation until s/he passes all three sections of the Alabama High School Graduation Exam.
