| Minor High School
served as the pilot site for the National Conference for Community and
Justice Heritage Panel in Alabama. Heritage Panel is a human relations
program designed to explore the diversity among Americans of different
races, ethnicities, and religions. This process fosters the values that
support the importance of understanding and appreciating individual
differences. Each year, 25 students undergo a two-day training program.
They develop insights and new views of themselves, an understanding of
their own prejudices, new understanding of the cultural backgrounds of
others, and a perspective on the racial problems which confront our
society. The trainees become certified panelists where the goal is to
help others develop new insights and an open mind about cultural issues
that have emerged as potential problems. Skills acquired through the
NCCJ Heritage Panel include leadership techniques, public speaking,
group processes, being a role model for cultural groups they represent,
and communication skills through a sharing of experiences. During the
past few years, the climate at MHS has improved and changed for the
better as a result of the work that is in progress. The Heritage
Panelists have led classroom dialogues on the importance of inclusion,
coordinated a Birmingham Pledge signing drive, ushered at the Martin
Luther King Unity Breakfast and the NCCJ Brotherhood Sisterhood Banquet,
and hope to lead a school-wide service project in the Minor community.
We have witnessed Minor take huge strides towards not only beginning an
inclusive school but also creating a climate of service and tolerance in
the Minor Community.
